Why did Rudy Giuliani destroy his reputation for Donald Trump?

Rudy Giuliani was, once upon a time, a genuinely impressive man.

His conduct during the 9/11 attacks was legendary — he was the man of the hour, the man at the scene, the man exposed to toxic fumes, breathing in dust, holding what seemed to be a thousand press conferences and interviews, coordinating responses to the bombings. It led to Giuliani being dubbed “America’s Mayor” for the way he kept it together under immense pressure.

Before that, Giuliani led the prosecution of mafia bosses, helped clean up the streets of New York City by putting away many criminals. He survived cancer, won the Mayoral race, and honestly? If Mr. Giuliani had died shortly after 2001, he’d have been remembered very, very well by a great many people. He didn’t, however. Despite suffering lasting health effects as a result of the 9/11 attacks, where his presence on the scene damaged his lungs to such a degree he still suffers the ill effects 25 years later. He got into an accident in 2025, and just this May 2026 he got so ill with pneumonia that he nearly died, and received the last rites from a priest before unexpectedly making a full recovery… his spokesman than said “Mr. Giuliani truly has nine lives!”

Rudy Giuliani, a lawyer by trade, represented President Donald J. Trump in his attempts to overthrow the 2020 election results. In doing so, Giuliani made so many proven false statements and lied under oath so blatantly that he was disbarred as a lawyer, fined 148 million dollars for defamation against two election officials in Georgia and forced to file for bankruptcy… the amount of unforced errors is baffling — had Giuliani retired from politics in 2001, he would now be remembered as a legendary figure and received the accolades and praise he so richly deserved but, like a moth to a flame, he courted publicity and his own destruction.
