After filming Last Tango In Paris, Maria Schneider, who was 19 at the time of filming, never spoke to director Bernardo Bertolucci again. At issue was the movie’s infamous “butter scene” in which she is anally raped by her lover, played by Marlon Brando. Bertolucci insisted the scene was in the original script that Schneider had read, but Schneider said she only found out that she was doing the scene on the day she arrived on set. While the intercourse in the scene is simulated, Schneider says that her screams were real—a true reaction to what was being done to her on camera. She later referred to Bertolucci as “a pimp and a thug.”
