It’s kind of odd, because the love life of Tom Cruise doesn’t really move in the same ways as your average run-of-the-mill celebrity. It’s… different. Everything about Cruise and how he does things is just a little different from how normal folks do it.
See in India there’s this distinction people make between a love marriage versus an arranged marriage. Cruise is in that boat, too. All his relationships are set up, planned, not by his parents but by the cult he belongs to, Scientology. It wasn’t always the case — his first wife, Mimi Rogers, he met her by himself. She got him into the cult, actually. Next up, Nicole Kidman. Big mistake; her father is a psychiatrist and Scientology is super against psychiatry (gee, I wonder why!) so things didn’t quite work out…
So after two failed marriages, Scientology set out to find a lady more… compatible, with Tom Cruise and his values. And the values of Scientology, of course. They set their eyes on Katie Holmes. The fact that she was in her twenties whereas Cruise was in his forties was all the sweeter for the cult — more pliable, easier to influence. On the anniversary of their first date, they were married. They had a child, daughter Suri, almost immediately. Of course the marriage failed, as did the previous two. And ever since, Tom Cruise hasn’t married again. Dated, yes. Dated plenty. But no marriage.
Tom Cruise doesn’t really have what we would call “a love life”. He belongs to a church that scouts girls for him, does background checks, studies their compatibility. Until the perfect candidate is found, he remains a free agent, unattached, single. Three failed marriages, three kids, and a risk-averse cult will do that to a man.
