The Monty Python group received a curious letter once.
An older British lady, rather religious apparently, wrote to them in earnest: “Are you aware that one of your members is a homosexual? The Bible says to stone any man who lays with another man as he would with a woman...”
Python member Eric Idle took it upon himself to respond, in the group’s typical humorous manner. He wrote back: “We found out who he was, took him outside and had him stoned.” I mean how do you respond to such a ridiculous letter? Did they expect the group to expel their gay friend from the group because they forgot about that particular Bible verse and they’d immediately rectify their mistake by removing the offending man?
Monty Python did have a gay member — Graham Chapman. He was an integral part of their productions, wrote many sketches and was just as wickedly funny as the rest of them. He was also a pipe-smoking lifelong rugby player and a hard drinker who was probably the most outwardly macho of all the group’s members, as irony would have it.
